If you have spent some time on social media then you’ve more likely seen an ad for Cocofloss. A company claiming to be a new “luxury dental floss.” Yes, you read that correctly, “luxury dental floss”. Luxury isn’t a word you think of when you think about dental floss…..I mean I certainly do not. How can floss be luxurious? What is Cocofloss and why is it different than other floss? Well, I wanted to find out answers to these questions. I did some research, and tested out Cocofloss myself to see what’s so special about this floss. Getting people excited to floss is tough enough, but if Cocofloss helps with this habit, I want to give it a try.
First I had to find out where can I buy Cocofloss? You can buy this product at Target, Sephora, Goop.com, Anthropologie, Nordstrom, and a few other stores. I ordered mine from their website https://cocofloss.com. Cocofloss comes in a variety of scents like orange, vanilla, strawberry, passion fruit, chocolate, coconut, mint, and so many more. This variety made it difficult for me to choose because all the scents sounded good to me ;). When I used the floss it smelled delicious!! The scents are not overwhelming or overpowering when your flossing. It has a great scent but not much of a taste.
Cocofloss is made at a family-owned factory in Italy. This is where I think the ‘luxury” comes into play. When I think of luxury, I think of ITALY! According to their website, the Italian fragrance supplier aromas are crafted with the highest quality and safe ingredients. Their website also claims the floss is crafted in Italy from a combination of natural and synthetic ingredients.
Cocofloss is thicker than most floss and has soft, flexible fibers that compresses to fit between tight contacts (the area between your teeth that touch each other). It can feel a little thick between the gums if you are not use to it, but trust me it’s doing it’s job and you will get use to the feeling. On their website (https://cocofloss.com) Cocofloss notes their floss is made of more than 500 interwoven filaments. The more woven filaments the thicker the floss. The texture of the floss can grab onto plaque and food better, thus it’s better at “cleaning/removing” harmful bacteria from the tooth surface than competitors floss.
Cocofloss states it’s “Like an exfoliating loofah for your teeth.” I must say that I really agree with this statement!
Some competitors floss is so smooth/silky and flat that it will “glide/slide” right over/in-between your teeth. However, it can be too smooth and slide right over the plaque!! I see it happen frequently at my practice because the floss just isn’t thick or texturized enough to do a thorough job. Cocofloss doesn’t have this problem because its round, thick polyester fiber material picks us sticky plaque with no issues.
Cocofloss never ripped or shredded for me. One disclaimer,I have tight contacts but I don’t have overhangs from fillings, crowns, or braces. So I can’t personally attest if it shreds in those situations. When I give my patients woven floss I tell them to take their time if they are not used to thicker floss. Be patient, learn to maneuver it between teeth, and use a new section of floss between each tooth/space.
Some patients no matter the brand will shred their floss due to certain factors with their teeth. If you try Cocofloss and it doesn’t work that’s ok, there are plenty of other floss options out there. However, Cocofloss has a money back guarantee called 100% GUM BLISS GUARANTEE…so rest assured if you don’t like it they will reimburse you.
Cocofloss has an added benefit of being coated with coconut oil which has antimicrobial properties. It is vegan-friendly (no beeswax), and free of toxins, including parabens, SLS (Sodium Lauryl Sulphate), and PFAS (polyfluoroalkyl substances). If you don’t know what PFAS is it’s a compound found in non-stick frying pans, fast-food packaging, water-resistant clothing and some dental floss! (It’s what gives some brands the smooth/silky texture). Cocofloss is cruelty-free and a Leaping Bunny certified company. Personally, I buy clean, cruelty-free products from make-up, toothpaste, shampoo, and floss to name a few!!
Cocofloss is not only making better floss they improved the entire product down to the box. The box is made of 100% recycled paper fibers and they use a reusable 32-yard Cocofloss dispenser which means you can purchase refillable spools!! The floss refills come in compostable packaging to cut down on single-use plastics! They even have an instructional video on how to replace the spools. Cocofloss is thinking beyond the scope of traditional dental companies and this is amazing to see!! A company that actually cares about the environment too!!
The only negative I see is the price. The average person who doesn’t appreciate the benefits of flossing may not see the value for the cost. Some may find $8-$10 pretty expensive for 32 yards of floss. I wish it was cheaper but after seeing for myself all that is put into the product they are making a higher quality product relative to other flosses.
You can save money $$ if you join their subscription. It’s called CocoBox subscription. You pick your 3 floss scents and they are delivered every 6 months.
Overall I had a wonderful experience with Cocofloss over the last 6 months! In my professional opinion, Cocofloss is no ordinary floss, it is a far superior when compared to the average dental floss. The unique soft yet thicker filaments coated in coconut oil are like no other on the market. It really ‘grabs” the plaque and helps prevent gingivitis and tartar buildup. Cocofloss is changing the game when it comes to dental floss.
Is this floss for everyone? Maybe not…..but it should be! This is one of my go to flosses and a lot of my colleagues share my enthusiasm for this floss! Will I continue to use it…YES!! I am already using my next refill spool!! (I first used strawberry and now I’m using orange)
Cocofloss removes plaque and food so well it will always have a place in my bathroom cabinet.
Go ahead and try it out for yourself!!…..Let me know what you think and if you notice healthier teeth and gums. (I am not sponsored or paid in anyway by this company…. Just another product I believe in!!)
Hoping to start the conversation
